Hugh Fenwick, MSc, C Eng, FICE, MCILT, Director
Hugh is a highly respected railway civil engineer and manager with a reputation for finding solutions and getting things done. His career spans the full spectrum of railway infrastructure design, construction, maintenance and management at a senior level.
He has been influential in the development of specialist CAD and computer simulation systems for railway design; led the design and was resident engineer for construction of one of the longest sections of new 200kmph railway in the UK and held responsibility for the maintenance and renewal of nearly 25% of the UK railway structures and buildings assets. For ten years he was managing director of one of the most successful UK railway consultancies, gaining the prestigious New Civil Engineer 'Consultant of the Year' award in 2001. Hugh has three awards from the Institution of Civil Engineers for papers on railway civil engineering.
During the past six years he has been a railway engineering adviser to the UK Department for Transport for the West Coast Main Line Upgrade and in this role was one of the team that reduced the project cost the from more than £13billion to £9billion. He has provided advice and strategic design input to a number of other major railway projects being developed and funded by the Department. Hugh worked with the UK Office of the Rail Regulator in assessing the funding to be provided over the next five years for structures and buildings on the UK rail network. Recently he has worked with the other ART directors in developing routes for heavy haul lines in Asia and Africa and establishing the data required to evaluate their commercial viability.
The key skills that Hugh brings to ART are in the areas of business management, strategic railway infrastructure design and railway structures.
